From 1997 to 2001 the city of Trieste, initiated a series of projects, funded by the European Union, the Region Friuli Venezia Giulia and the city, in the requalification of the area of Cittavecchia, the medieval heart of the city.

The reconstruction of Casa della Musica has been part of this intervention called Piano Urban.

The project has been realized in close collaboration and in perfect balance with the planning administration on the one hand and the future management of the Scuola di Musica 55 music school on the other hand, in order to answer contemporarily to the needs of urban recovery and to the new sofisticated functions.

The general planning scheme of the scholastic compound, worked by urban planning and successive project work, identifies the building operations destined to accomplish the expansion of the scholastic activities:

• nursery organized on three levels below the principal terrace in front of the Castelletto (completed 2009)
• kindergarten and elementary school on the slope of the hill at the back of the historical building (completed 2011)
• gymnasium next to the historical building, integrated into the morphology of the hillside (programmed for 2016)

Contest

The Municipality of Buja launched an Ideas Competition aimed at the redevelopment of the school of Collosomano “Pieri Menis”.

Designed by the architect Giancarlo De Carlo in the years 1980/81, the building was then built thanks to a substantial donation from the government of the United States of America following the earthquake of 1976.

“A space never becomes a place as long as the presence and use of human beings do not live it, change it, consuming it, transforms it, give it an identity that makes it different from all other spaces and places” Giancarlo De Carlo

The survey has revealed a number of features that eventually led to the conception of the redevelopment project of the entire complex.
