Born Trieste Karst on the plateau, in an area with one of the highest concentrations of research institutes in Italy, AREA Science Park is a complex system centered on innovation, the exploitation of research and development technological companies.

Starassociati collaborates with AREA since 1984, taking an active part in the development of projects in both urban scale that architectural scale.

The interventions regarded the two campuses Padriciano and Basovizza:

place Forcella Marmarole (Belluno)

year 2015

client CAI Auronzo

Contest

CAI Auronzo, in collaboration with the Foundation Architettura Belluno Dolomiti and with the support of AKU Italy srl, Bim Piave and the Municipality of Auronzo, has launched an Ideas Competition for the acquisition of a preliminary project for the construction of an alpine bivouac.

“A mountain you really learn to know when you sleep upon it.” Julius Kugy

The group of designers, passionate climbers and ski mountaineers, has extensive knowledge of the mountain. People aware of how to use of the bivouacs at high altitude, management problems and functional of these structures, the strong interaction of the weather with the mountain environment, the dynamics related to the snowfall and all that entails the mountaineering activity at high altitude during the whole year.

The visit, during which have been observed the topography of the entire site, the access routes to the Forcella Marmarole and snow conditions, has spearheaded the design process.

From 1997 to 2001 the city of Trieste initiated a series of projects, funded by the European Union, the Region Friuli Venezia Giulia and the Municipality, for the requalification of the area of Cittavecchia, the medieval heart of the city.

The reconstruction of the Casa dello Studente has been part of this intervention, called Piano Urban.

A relatively simple intervention of restructuring has allowed to discover, at the level of the foundations of the building, a Roman oil press made of decorated stone in good condition, and an important part of the Roman walls.

The general planning scheme of the scholastic compound, worked by urban planning and successive project work, identifies the building operations destined to accomplish the expansion of the scholastic activities:

• nursery organized on three levels below the principal terrace in front of the Castelletto (completed 2009)
• kindergarten and elementary school on the slope of the hill at the back of the historical building (completed 2011)
• gymnasium next to the historical building, integrated into the morphology of the hillside (programmed for 2016)

client Cooperative Operaie di Trieste

The wall made of wire mesh is designed to wrap a temporary structure of the former cooperative society for food distribution Coop Operaie of Trieste. After the transition period the structure containing the commercial activity has been dismantled and the wall remained.

With a play of oblique lines, there was built a structure that supports a cantilevered metal stairs which joins the road level with the plane of the above square. The whole structure has been executed in galvanized steel and covered with panels of galvanized and electrowelded mesh fixed on a secondary tubular frame.

The project has paid special attention to the study of landscape: over the years the large bulkhead has been wrapped in ivy and jasmine that with the changing of the seasons changes in color and permeability.

The riqualification of the Mental Health Clinic in the Domio neighborhood of Trieste has dealt with the modernisation of the existing building and the its extension by the construction of a new structure.

The aim was to improve the general functionality by works of redistribution of interiour spaces and renew a more direct relationship of interiour and exteriour.

The functions have been redistributed in a process of participated design: during the meetings with the operators the needs and requests emerged theat have, then, led to compositive decisions.

The project proposal is part of the district of the Old Port of Trieste in its most northern part, known as the Barcola embankment, over an area of intervention of about 45,000 square meters.

The idea is to build a new commercial structure in an urban park equipped to carry out different activities related to sports and leisure.

The settlement system is organized by thematic areas (equipped park; commercial structure and parking; facilities for sport, leisure and restoration) also provides a complete redevelopment of the area and the planning of a new traffic organization.

The construction of the new Museum of Modern Art in Muggia, an Istrian-Venetian town in the south of Trieste, is an interesting new element within the reference area.

The idea is born as a result of the donation by the artist Ugo Carà (1908 – 2004) for the Municipality of Muggia: he gives part of his works, on condition that they find space in a new suitable building; the designers take advantage of the availability of the Master for consultations on the design, during which Carà gives accurate indications.

After a strict analysis of the context, the project develops considering the diversified and complex environment and the public and collective role of a museum, following four guidelines:

• respect for the place
• flexible use
• study of exhibition paths
• proper use of natural and artificial light

Contest

The Municipality of Buja launched an Ideas Competition aimed at the redevelopment of the school of Collosomano “Pieri Menis”.

Designed by the architect Giancarlo De Carlo in the years 1980/81, the building was then built thanks to a substantial donation from the government of the United States of America following the earthquake of 1976.

“A space never becomes a place as long as the presence and use of human beings do not live it, change it, consuming it, transforms it, give it an identity that makes it different from all other spaces and places” Giancarlo De Carlo

The survey has revealed a number of features that eventually led to the conception of the redevelopment project of the entire complex.

Reconstruction and restauration of Teobaldo Ciconi Theatre at San Daniele del Friuli

Building subject to heritage law, D. Lgs. n. 42/2004 art.10 c.1
Variation of urbanistic municipal law  

The final project, divided into several lots, will provide the replacement of the theater building with the exception of the 1920’ wing in classical style facing the street: this solution has been chosen because the existing building’s seismic retrofitting  would have generated excessively high costs.

This was possible thanks to the above-mentioned variants, that allowed to define the value of the Ciconi Theatre, outlining the possible volumetric and technological developments.

The new parts will be organized within the existing building, with a contemporary language and advanced technology.
